Royals: King Charles presents flags to Irish Guards

The Trooping the Colour birthday parade is one of the highlights of the royal calendar in Great Britain. Despite his cancer, Charles wants to take part. Will Kate be there too?

British King Charles III (75) symbolically presented new flags to guard units at a ceremony at Windsor Castle on Monday. As “Colonel in Chief” of the units that protect the royal family, he received the Irish Guards in the courtyard of the castle, who will be holding the traditional birthday parade “Trooping the Colour” this year.

During the parade, hundreds of soldiers in red uniforms and bearskin hats will march on foot and on horseback, together with members of the Royal Family, from Buckingham Palace to the Horse Guards Parade parade ground. Charles plans to take part when the time comes again this Saturday, despite his cancer. He will not ride, however, but will travel in a carriage.

Will Kate appear on the palace balcony?

The name “Trooping the Colour” refers to the presentation of flags and comes from a time when flags bearing one’s side’s colours played an important role in battle. As such, the presentation of new flags is an important preparation for the ceremony, which usually culminates in a flypast by military aircraft while the Royal Family waves to the cheering crowds from the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

The dress rehearsal a week beforehand is already a spectacle that attracts many spectators. Charles’ daughter-in-law Princess Kate (42), who also suffers from cancer, was actually supposed to take the so-called Colonel’s Review. The wife of heir to the throne Prince William (41) has the honorary title of Colonel of the troop, but had to cancel. There was speculation that she could appear on the balcony of Buckingham Palace on Saturday.

There is no doubt that William’s younger brother Prince Harry (39) and his wife Duchess Meghan (42) will not be there. The two left the Royal Family in 2020 and now live with their two children Prince Archie (5) and Princess Lilibet (3) in the US state of California.
