Singer: Reinhard Mey: Pictures from Ukraine break my heart

The reports from Ukraine remind the songwriter of his own childhood in Berlin during the Second World War. The experiences of the nights of bombing are deeply etched in his memory.

For songwriter Reinhard Mey, the war in Ukraine brings back memories of his own childhood during the Second World War. “I am very aware of the fears and horrors of war. I was born in the war and experienced them myself, and I remember them well, even though I was a small child,” said the artist, who was born in Berlin in 1942, to the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”. Elementary experiences such as bomb blasts, hunger, cold, the feeling of despair and the helplessness of those who are supposed to protect and comfort you are burned deep into your soul.

“I see the ruins, the burned-out city through which my mother rushed with me, down the stairs to the air raid shelter,” the artist told the newspaper. He still sees the desperate, the injured, the broken returnees. The pictures from Ukraine bring back these memories for him. He doesn’t need much imagination to be able to empathize with the people’s plight: “The pictures tear my heart apart.”
