ARD presenter Alexander Bommes talks about his anticipation of the European Championships in Germany. He thinks a summer fairytale is possible.
The European Championship fever in Germany is rising and rising. The popular ARD presenter Alexander Bommes (48) will of course be back at the major football event and will provide fans with all kinds of background information. In the run-up to the European Championship, the former handball professional spoke to the news agency spot on news about his thoughts and feelings regarding the home tournament. Bommes revealed, among other things, that he was still filming the new season of his quiz show “Gefragt – Gejagt” until the end of May and that he only started looking forward to and preparing for the European Championship after that.
For Bommes, however, the 2024 European Championship has the potential to be a summer fairytale, but he is linking this to the performance of the DFB team: “I trust the German team to do it.” Especially if they come into the tournament with courage and passion. “And then we would have the chance, in these socially rather angry times, to unite behind a great cause again and enjoy the weeks,” said Bommes.
Alexander Bommes and his relationship with football
Bommes also revealed that he would rather watch the games from the sofa than at a public viewing when he is not at the stadium. For the former handball player, football is also a “good mix” between real love and a professional relationship. “The love of the sport and the team spirit is never called into question by the necessary professional distance,” Bommes explains his approach.
In his handball career, Alexander Bommes played for the clubs TSV Altenholz, TSV Bayer Dormagen and VfL Gummersbach in the first and second leagues. At the same time, he studied law and worked as a sports reporter for NDR. Since 2011, Bommes has been part of the “Sportschau” presentation team. He has also presented the “NDR Quiz Show”, the talk show “Tietjen and Bommes” and the “Hamburg Journal”. Since 2012, he has also hosted the popular quiz show “Gefragt – Gejagt”, which has been broadcast in the early evening program on Das Erste since 2015.
