He Pope Francisco had an audience this Friday with more than a hundred comedians and comedy actors from all over the world, attended by several comedians from Latin American countries such as Argentina Malena Guinzburg or the Mexican Florinda Meza García.
Among the international comedians who attended were Americans Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Jim Gaffigan, Conan O’Brien, Chris Rock, Tig Notaro and Whoopi Goldbergalthough the majority of comedians who attended are Italian.
Three Spanish comedians also attended the hearing, Cristina Castaño, Victoria Martín and Sara Escuderoas well as comedians from Brazil and Portugal.
The Pope in his speech praised the comedians and told them that “Humor does not offend, it does not humiliate, it does not nail people to their defects.. While today communication often generates oppositions, you know how to bring together different and sometimes even opposite realities. “How much we have to learn from you!”
The objective of this meeting was “to celebrate the beauty of human diversity and promote a message of peace, love and solidarity, and it promises to be a significant moment of intercultural dialogue and exchange of joy and hope,” the Vatican said.
Humor “denounces excesses of power” or invisible realities by making people laugh, “without sowing alarm or terror,” Pope Francis highlighted this Friday.
Comedians “awaken the critical sense by making people laugh and smile,” and “they do it by telling life stories, narrating reality,” so they “speak to people about big and small problems,” the pontiff said in a speech to the assistants.

Malena gave the pontiff some alfajores, “because it is a sweet food that I suppose if you don’t have it here you must miss it”, the comedian told EFE, who asked the Pope for a message for Argentina. “Defend the nobility of the country,” the pope responded, as Guinzburg explained, remarking that for her this Friday’s meeting was a “very exciting” experience.
When the invitation arrived, the comedian thought it was a joke but she was not the only one, “I realized when talking to people from other countries that there were several of us who thought the same thing, like it was strange,” and she confessed that she will use this experience to create content.
