Princess Kate was not seen for months due to health reasons. That is now changing. But it will probably be a while before she can resume her normal daily routine
Royal return: Princess Kate is back in public just in time for the King’s traditional birthday parade. Around two and a half months after it was announced that she was suffering from cancer, the wife of the British heir to the throne, Prince William, wants to take part in the traditional “Trooping the Colour” parade this Saturday. The 42-year-old announced this in a personal statement.
Kate and her three children want to ride together in a carriage to the parade ground in London and then appear with the rest of the Royal Family on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. Father-in-law King Charles III, who is also being treated for cancer, was delighted.
Plans may change at short notice
At the same time, Kate made it clear that she is not out of the woods yet. It is not impossible that her plans could change at short notice. Her treatment is ongoing, wrote the Princess of Wales. “I look forward to attending the King’s birthday parade with my family this weekend and hope to be able to attend some public events in the summer,” said the statement, which Kensington Palace published together with a new photo of the future Queen.
“I’m making good progress but as anyone going through chemotherapy knows, there are good days and bad days,” Kate explained. “On the bad days you feel weak, tired and need to give your body a rest. But on the good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of your wellbeing.”
No further public dates in sight yet
Her treatment will continue for several more months – there are no decisions yet about the future queen’s further public appointments and no timetable. For now, it is a matter of Kate being able to attend individual events, in close coordination with her doctors.
On good days, she enjoys taking part in the school life of her children Prince George (10), Princess Charlotte (9) and Prince Louis (6), Kate continued. She then spends time doing things that give her positive energy and also works a little from home. “I’m learning to be patient, especially in times of uncertainty. I take each day as it comes, listen to my body and give myself the much-needed time to get healthy.”
Last seen in public at Christmas
Kate last appeared in public at Christmas. At that time, she and her family attended a church service near the royal estate of Sandringham in eastern England.
Details about Kate’s illness are not known. She had an abdominal operation in mid-January. Tests after the operation showed that she had cancer, Kate said in a video in which she made her illness public at the end of March.
Husband William arrives on horseback
Kate’s father-in-law Charles also has cancer and is being treated. Details are not known about him either. However, the British head of state has been attending regular appointments again since the end of April and most recently traveled to France for the 80th anniversary of the so-called D-Day.
Unlike the king, Kate had so far completely withdrawn from her duties as a royal. Her husband William also withdrew for several weeks in the spring to support his wife and their three children.
The 41-year-old will be taking part in this Saturday’s parade on horseback. Charles, who also rode in “Trooping the Colour” last year, is using a carriage this time to travel to the Horseguards Parade.
Most recently, Kate wrote a letter to the Irish Guards, the royal regiment, apologizing for missing the rehearsal for the King’s traditional birthday parade. Kate has the honorary title of “Colonel of the Irish Guards” and was therefore supposed to have attended the dress rehearsal last Saturday.
“I hope to be able to represent you all again soon,” the letter said. This had fuelled speculation that the princess would soon be seen in public again – speculation that has now come true.
