Olaf Scholz may be at his lowest point in the polls, but he is assured of Harald Schmidt’s sympathy.
Harald Schmidt (66) has often expressed sympathy for Olaf Scholz, and this has not changed despite recent setbacks for the Chancellor, such as the SPD’s defeat in the European elections.
“I’m a big fan of Olaf Scholz,” the entertainer told the German Press Agency in Cologne. “This excited ‘now I’m going to speak plainly’ is pointless. European elections: tick it off! And then it’s off to the good pictures in Bari, where he is with people who all feel the same way – except for Meloni.”
Scholz has definitely shown perseverance and doesn’t lose his nerve easily, said Schmidt. “You really have to look at how long he’s been in the business and the kind of beatings he’s taken: he was mayor, had a bad result as party chairman – luckily Lauterbach also ran, he was even worse. Secretary General, not a top result either. He was in the Merkel cabinet and so on, he just sees how it works.”
Schmidt believes that one should not believe that anything would change with Friedrich Merz as chancellor. “Nothing. He has to find his feet first. He has never been in the cabinet before.”
