Visibly scarred by a serious bicycle accident, British celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has called for people to wear bicycle helmets. “Honestly, I’m lucky to be here now,” the 57-year-old says with a shaky voice in a video clip he posted on Instagram.
His doctors were fantastic. “But honestly: you have to wear a helmet,” Ramsay stressed. It doesn’t matter that helmets are expensive, how short the route is, whether it’s adults or children. “That’s really important.” The TV chef posted a photo of his demolished bicycle helmet.
The accident happened a few days ago in the US state of Connecticut, Ramsay said. He did not give any details. No bones were broken and he did not suffer any other serious injuries. “But I am a little bruised and look like a purple potato.” In the video, Ramsay pulls up his chef’s jacket and reveals a huge bruise above his ribcage.
“I am grateful to all the doctors, nurses and staff at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London who cared for me and examined me, but I am most grateful to my helmet for saving my life,” Ramsay wrote in a statement. He is an avid cyclist and triathlete.
