Armie Hammer (37) was once on his way to becoming a Hollywood star. However, allegations of abuse and accusations of alleged cannibalism fantasies caused the US actor to withdraw a few years ago. Now the “Call Me by Your Name” actor is speaking about the matter.
He says he has had three and a half years of painful lessons that have given him wisdom, says Hammer in the aptly titled . When the allegations first came out, he felt like he was in a tornado. All he could do at the time was protect himself, says the actor. Even though he wanted to go outside and shout: “This is crazy, what is everyone talking about?”
There were the strangest things that were said about him – and which he can now look back on with some distance. “People called me a cannibal and everyone believed them. They said: ‘Yep, the guy ate people.'” Hammer remembers with a laugh. “Do you know what you have to do to be a cannibal? You have to eat people! How am I supposed to be a cannibal?! It was bizarre.”
The death of Armie Hammer’s career
The actor was accused of misconduct in 2021. Messages allegedly written by Hammer were circulated online. In these, he is said to have written about violent sex fantasies and cannibalism. At the time, he said in a statement that the allegations were “bullshit”. As a result of the scandal, his agency parted ways with him and he had, among other things, given up a role alongside Jennifer Lopez (54) in the film “Shotgun Wedding”.
Hammer describes the scandal and its aftermath as the death of his ego and the death of his career. “Whatever people said, whatever happened, I’m at a point in my life now where I’m grateful for every single piece,” says Hammer.
In his old life he “didn’t feel good. I never felt satisfied, I never had enough. I was never at a point where I was happy with myself – where I had self-esteem.” He hadn’t learned how to give himself love or self-affirmation, because he got that from other people through his job.
Armie Hammer is working on a new project
When asked about his career at this moment, Hammer suggests that he is currently “nowhere” as an actor. But he apparently does not want to say goodbye to film, even if he is no longer being offered any jobs and is currently not welcome in Hollywood. He tells the podcast that he has written a script together with a friend and the two are currently trying to realize the project.
