Will Smith is currently celebrating his comeback with the action comedy “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” – two years after the slapping scandal at the Oscars. Now his next role is in a sci-fi thriller.
For Will Smith (55, “King Richard”) things are continuing to go uphill in Hollywood. A good two years after the slapping scandal at the Oscars, the actor is now enjoying success in cinemas with the action comedy “Bad Boys: Ride or Die”, which was released in June.
And the next leading role is already lined up: Smith is set to appear in the sci-fi thriller “Resistor” for Sony Pictures, according to US industry journals. The planned film is based on the novel “Influx” (German title “Control”) by the US bestselling author and programmer Daniel Suarez. The book is set in a dystopian society in which the government kidnaps and imprisons scientists and controls new technologies.
Screenwriters Zak Olkewicz (“Bullet Train”) and Eric Singer (“Top Gun: Maverick”) are on board to write the script, and a director is still being sought, Variety reports.
Smith (“Men in Black”) slapped host Chris Rock on stage at the 2022 Oscars after he made a joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith. Smith received a lot of criticism and was banned from Academy Awards events for ten years.
In January 2023, Smith and co-star Martin Lawrence announced plans for a fourth installment in the “Bad Boys” action series. The original film, starring Smith and Lawrence as police duo Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett, was released in 1995, with sequels in 2003 and 2020. The two actors traveled to Berlin at the end of May for the European premiere of “Bad Boys: Ride or Die.”
