Queen Elizabeth’s youngest son and his wife are considered modest and largely free of scandals. They tied the knot 25 years ago. What is the secret of their marriage?

British Prince Edward (60) and his wife Duchess Sophie (59) celebrated their silver wedding anniversary on Wednesday. The palace published a photo showing the two in casual clothing. Sophie, who is wearing a beige jacket, is leaning with her back against Edward, who has his arms wrapped around her stomach. Both are looking at the camera with a relaxed expression.

The youngest brother of King Charles III (75) and his wife are rarely in the public eye, but are increasingly playing an important role in the royal family.

Edward and Sophie stepped in for Charles and Kate

The background to the growing importance of the two is, among other things, the departure of Prince Harry (39) and his wife Duchess Meghan (42) from the inner circle of the royal family as well as the forced withdrawal of Prince Andrew (64). Queen Elizabeth’s second eldest son had fallen into disrepute because of his involvement in the abuse scandal surrounding the US multimillionaire Jeffrey Epstein.

In addition, King Charles and Princess Kate (42) were temporarily absent in recent months due to their cancer. Edward and Sophie stepped in and took over royal duties.

Sophie comes from the middle class

Edward and Sophie were married on June 19, 1999 in Windsor. They have two children, Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor (20) and James Mountbatten-Windsor (16), who bears the title Earl of Wessex. The family is considered relatively modest and largely free of scandals. Edward is the only child of Queen Elizabeth whose first marriage did not end in divorce. Sophie is considered down-to-earth. She comes from a middle-class family.

The family resides in a stately mansion in the county of Surrey, called Bagshot Park, which, according to the tabloid newspaper “The Sun”, has 120 rooms.
