Queen Elizabeth’s second eldest son had fallen into disrepute because of his involvement in the abuse scandal surrounding the US multimillionaire Jeffrey Epstein.
In addition, King Charles and Princess Kate (42) were temporarily absent in recent months due to their cancer. Edward and Sophie stepped in and took over royal duties.
Sophie comes from the middle class
Edward and Sophie were married on June 19, 1999 in Windsor. They have two children, Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor (20) and James Mountbatten-Windsor (16), who bears the title Earl of Wessex.
