As heir to the throne, William has a special role in the British royal family. The past year must not have been easy for the Prince of Wales.
The British heir to the throne, Prince William, is celebrating his 42nd birthday today. Kensington Palace posted a spectacular photo showing William jumping over a dune with his children Prince George (10), Princess Charlotte (9) and Prince Louis (6).
Above it was written: “Happy birthday dad, we all love you so much”, signed with a “C” for his wife Catherine (42) – who is usually just called Kate – and an x for “kisses”.
Congratulations also came from Buckingham Palace. The royal family posted a black and white photo of a smiling King Charles – then still Prince Charles – with his older son as a baby on his lap.
“Happy Birthday to The Prince of Wales!” was the message – William had taken over the title of heir to the throne from his now 75-year-old father after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
William cheered on England at the European Football Championship
Yesterday, William was still cheering on the English national team in the group match of the European Football Championship against Denmark in the stadium in Frankfurt. There he smiled into the cameras together with Denmark’s King Frederik X (56) and his daughter Princess Josephine (13). The game ended 1:1.
William is the president of the English Football Association (FA). He is also a football enthusiast in his private life and is a fan of the Birmingham Premier League club Aston Villa.
Cancer diagnoses overshadowed last year
The Prince of Wales has had a difficult year, marked by worries about his loved ones. First his father and then his wife Kate were diagnosed with cancer. In order to be there for his children, he also temporarily withdrew from his royal duties.
The situation has since improved somewhat. The King can be seen regularly in public again, and Kate appeared for the first time last weekend at the “Trooping the Colour” birthday parade. In a social media post shortly before, she gave rare insights into her life with chemotherapy: “I’m making good progress,” she wrote. But she’s not out of the woods yet.
William may also have been burdened by the ongoing dispute with his brother Harry (39). The siblings, who were once considered inseparable, have been at loggerheads for several years.
