”Inside Out 2” exceeded the US$500 million worldwide, according to the statement published this Saturday by Walt Disney. The movie animation developed by the Pixar studio also became the highest grossing of the year in the United States.

During its opening weekend, the feature film had previously generated US$155 million in ticket sales in the United States and Canada in its opening weekend.

These numbers represent a relief for the popular animation studio owned by The Walt Disney Companygiven that comes from two consecutive failuresas they were ”Elementary” and ”Lightyear”.

In addition, not only Pixar benefits, but it also marks a success for movie theater owners, since this year they have a smaller number of films to release after what were the strikes in Hollywood in 2023, causing delays that are already impacting the current period.

”Inside Out 2” is a sequel to the hit 2015 animated film, about the inner workings of a girl’s mind. In the second installment of the Disney film, the main character, Riley, has become a teenager and faces new emotions, such as anxiety and envy.

Inside Out: What is the theory of the 27 emotions on which the film is based?

The premiere of ”Inside Out 2” takes place nine years after the animated film Pete Docter “Inside Out” which was a great success due to its original plot. This film invites reflection on the complexity of the human mind and the essential role of each emotion in people’s daily lives.

The first installment of this saga, published in 2015, focused on five basic emotions: Joy, which is in charge, Fear, Disgust, Anger and Sadness. Each emotion was a character in this story inside the head of a 12-year-old girl named Riley.

The plot of the film released last Thursday, June 13 in Argentina accompanies Riley in her transition through adolescence. That’s when the author decides to add four new emotions that come into play. However, Docter and Kelsey Mannthe director of the second installment, wanted to add nine, but they were finally discarded for making the narrative too complex.

In any case, many emotions are left out that are not addressed in the film as we base it on “The Theory of 27 Emotions”, disseminated a few years ago by specialists in human behavior.

The theory of the 27 emotions

According to a theory shared by the University of Berkeley, Human beings can experience up to 27 emotions.

The researchers subjected participants to a variety of stimuli, both real and imagined, to observe their emotional reactions. From these observations, they concluded that human emotions can be classified into 27 different categories.

The identified emotions include a wide range of emotional experiences, from the most common and easily recognizable to those that are more complex and subtle. These emotions are:

  • Admiration
  • Worship
  • Keen
  • Happiness
  • Relief
  • Love
  • Anxiety
  • Disgust
  • Astonishment
  • Compassion
  • Confusion
  • Desire
  • Fun
  • Pain
  • Enthusiasm
  • Envy
  • Fascination
  • Gratitude
  • Gonna
  • Irritation
  • Fear
  • Pride
  • Remorse
  • Security
  • Serenity
  • Surprise
  • Sadness

It should be noted that although these emotions may vary from person to person, most individuals are able to differentiate between “positive” and “negative” emotions. However, it is not always easy to identify each specific emotion.

In ”Inside Out 2” the emotions that appear are joy, sadness, fear, anger, fear, disgust, shame, boredom, envy and anxiety. Therefore, there are several left on the list that could have their place in a future installment, if there is one.
