Britney Spears has a difficult relationship with her sons Sean and Jayden. But they spoke to each other on the phone on Mother’s Day.
Britney Spears’ (42) problems with her two sons Sean Preston (18) and Jayden James (17) have been making headlines for years. The singer lost custody of her children to their father Kevin Federline (46) in 2008 and has allegedly had little contact with them since then. But on Mother’s Day (May 12) they spoke on the phone, Federline’s lawyer Mark Vincent Kaplan now reveals. Now the signs point to reconciliation.
“Obviously, reconciliation/reunification is somewhat complex and can be a process that takes some time,” explains Kaplan. The phone call was “a good sign and a step in the right direction.” However, “more than just a phone call” is needed for complete reconciliation.
Spears did not travel to see her sons
Sean and Jayden have been living in Hawaii with their father Kevin Federline, his wife and their children since 2023. Recently there were media reports that Spears flew to the island to meet with her children – Kaplan denies this. “While Kevin supports the boys having a relationship with their mother and is happy that the boys finally spoke to her on the phone around Mother’s Day, the reports that she flew to Hawaii and met with them are not true,” he stresses.
The pop star’s relationship with the children has been strained for years, and the two parties have repeatedly publicly clashed. In June 2023, Kaplan stated that Spears had not seen her sons “in over a year.”
Sean and Jayden were born in 2005 and 2006 during Britney Spears’ turbulent marriage to Federline. A year later, the couple separated and the musician’s mental health began to deteriorate. In 2008, she lost custody and was placed under her father’s conservatorship, which only ended in 2021 after 13 years.
