In December 2022, Céline Dion posted a video on her Instagram account in which she announced that she was terminally ill. The singer was diagnosed with stiff person syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that causes severe cramps and stiffening throughout the body. The extent to which Dion’s life is affected by the disease is revealed in the documentary “I Am: Céline Dion,” which is currently available on Amazon Prime Video.

The 56-year-old was accompanied by Oscar-nominated director and producer Irene Taylor Brodsky for several months. She filmed the singer in her home in Las Vegas and shows how many medications Dion has to take, how she uses exercise to alleviate her symptoms and what it looks like when Dion’s whole body is seized by a seizure.

She occasionally has problems walking, speaking and – probably worst of all – singing, because her vocal cords are cramped. “My voice determined my life,” says Dion in one scene. The fact that she can no longer perform as she was used to for decades is difficult for her to accept. Dion can look back on an extraordinary career.
