British Royals: “Holyrood Week”: King Charles arrives in Scotland

Shortly before a new parliament is elected in London, the British royal couple will make a detour to Edinburgh. But this year their stay will be shorter than usual.

King Charles III has arrived in Edinburgh for the traditional “Holyrood Week”. Every year, the British monarch spends several days in his official residence in Scotland, the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

Upon his arrival, the 75-year-old symbolically received the keys to the Scottish capital, which were immediately returned. Charles and his wife Queen Camilla (76) had previously arrived by helicopter and were received with a military ceremony.

Charles is needed as head of state

The week-long stay has been shortened this year. A new parliament will be elected in Great Britain on Thursday. Charles will then be needed in his role as head of state when he appoints a new prime minister.

Edinburgh is celebrating its 900th anniversary this year. Charles will attend a celebration at Edinburgh Castle on Wednesday. Heir to the throne Prince William (42) and other members of the royal family are also expected to attend a ceremony of the Order of the Thistle in St Giles’ Cathedral.
