The Oscar winner will receive the TIFF Share Her Journey Groundbreaker Award in Toronto on September 8.
Cate Blanchett will be honored at the Toronto Film Festival 2024 with a Tribute Award, and will also participate in a conversation event with the public and journalists.
The Oscar winner will receive the TIFF Share Her Journey Groundbreaker Award in Toronto on September 8. Blanchett recently starred in Rumorsby the Canadian director Guy Maddinwhich premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and is expected to have a North American premiere at TIFF in September.
Proceeds from the Tribute Awards go to the festival’s TIFF Every Story Fund, which promotes diversity, equity and inclusion in filmmaking. The gala dinner to raise money for the festival’s philanthropic initiatives is also an occasional harbinger of Oscar recognition and is held each year at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel.
“Cate Blanchett is a marvel. One of the greatest actresses in cinema history, she has consistently demonstrated range, depth and fearlessness on screen. Off screen, she has been a tireless advocate for greater equality and justice across many sectors,” said TIFF Executive Director, Cameron Baileyin a statement on Tuesday.
The star of Tár, Blue Jasmine, Carol and Elizabeth is also a prolific producer, through her company Dirty Films (The New Boy, Miss America), and has served as co-artistic director of the Sydney Theatre Company.
TIFF Tribute Award winners often have films on the official Toronto schedule.

Previously, Toronto announced that David Cronenberg will receive the Norman Jewison Lifetime Achievement Award and the Oscar-nominated actress Amy Adams will receive the TIFF Tribute Performer Award. Previous Tribute Awards honorees include J.Jessica Chastain, Roger Deakins, Colman Domingo, Brendan Fraser, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Joaquin Phoenix, Taika Waititi, Michelle Yeoh and Chloé Zhao.
