Most of the story is told in flashbacks, with character Forrest telling strangers his surprisingly exciting life story while waiting for the bus on the bench. The original bench from the film is in the Savannah History Museum in Georgia. The couple probably got engaged on a similar bench at the Chippewa Square bus stop in Savannah, where the scenes were filmed.

The actress and the musician are said to have been in a relationship since May 2021. They secretly married in New Orleans in April 2022 before celebrating a second, big fairytale wedding in Venice in October 2023.
