New season of “Bezzel & Schwarz” episodes: Exciting and touching river stories

This time, the road trip documentary series “Bezzel & Schwarz” takes the two film stars to six Bavarian rivers – including unforgettable moments.

The sixth season of the documentary series “Bezzel & Schwarz: Die Grenzgänger” (since 2019) with the popular Eberhofer crime stars Sebastian Bezzel (53) and Simon Schwarz (53) starts on July 8th at 8:15 p.m. on BR television. The six new episodes were actually supposed to come out at the beginning of June, but the destructive floods in Bavaria made it unthinkable. “The six new episodes of the popular documentary series with Sebastian Bezzel and Simon Schwarz revolve around the topic of rivers and, above all, highlight the beautiful sides and the value […]which is currently not appropriate given the catastrophic conditions in many districts and the current plight of many people in the Free State,” the broadcaster said at the time about the postponement.

But now the time has come: the actor friends are visiting the Bavarian rivers Danube (opening episode), Inn (July 15), Altmühl (July 29), Lech (August 5), Isar (August 12) and Main (August 19) in their motorhome. As always, the format also deals with history (such as the Roman ships in Regensburg), art, culture, environmental protection and inclusion – all topics that both are equally interested in. When it comes to the sporting aspects of their trip, however, their passions are somewhat more unevenly distributed. Bezzel and Schwarz reveal what surprised them most in the six river episodes in a double interview with spot on news.

What surprised you most personally while filming the new season?

Sebastian Bezzel: What surprised me most was how beautiful the renaturalized Altmühl is.

Simon Schwarz: And what surprised me most was the need to preserve the course of a river in its ecosystem. How much money we would save if we let the rivers be a little more rivers…

What experience will you never forget from filming the sixth season?

Schwarz: The reports from the Landshut Water Rescue Service were particularly memorable for me.

Bezzel: I was very amused when Simon and I tried to set up the folding boat. Simon assured me that it would take 10 to 20 minutes – but we were quite stupid and it took us over two hours.

Which river experience is unforgettable for you?

Schwarz: The occupation of the Danube floodplains in Hainburg and the associated rescue of the Danube-Auen National Park.

Bezzel: There are a few. I have fond memories of the first barbecues and campfire parties on the Loisach near Garmisch. With beer, of course, and a beautiful landscape all around.

This time, one of the episodes is about to go up high. Is the documentary series perhaps slowly starting to act as a kind of experiential therapy for the fear of heights, Mr. Bezzel?

Bezzel: It’s more like this documentary series made me realise that I suffer from a fear of heights. It’s worst on buildings, observation towers etc. on those metal stairs with grid floors. That’s not my thing at all, everything inside me contracts and I panic. In the first season, Simon and I climbed the Bayernturm in the Rhön-Grabfeld district. And that’s when I was overcome by this fear of heights and it really wasn’t fun for me. When we got back down, I was totally exhausted, because this constant state of panic is really exhausting. So I’m not being treated at all, I just avoid activities like climbing various towers.

This season, Simon Schwarz will again be making some sporting appearances. How much does sport play a part in your private life?

Schwarz: Unfortunately, not as much as I would like. My private life has shrunk to just a few hours a week, so the few hours I have left belong exclusively to my family. The rest is work.
