They were once France’s glamorous couple. But after Nicolas Sarkozy, his wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is now also being investigated.
The French ex-president Nicolas Sarkozy (69) has been under the scrutiny of the judicial authorities for years due to illegal campaign financing. On July 9, an investigation was also launched against his wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy (56). The case concerns allegations that Sarkozy financed his 2007 election campaign with money from the Libyan ruler Muammar al-Gaddafi (1942-2011).
Lawyers want to challenge decision
The former French First Lady and prominent singer is accused of witness manipulation and involvement in a criminal organization with the aim of gang-related fraud, according to Paris judicial sources. French media also report that Bruni has been placed under judicial supervision. With the exception of her husband, she is not allowed to have any contact with anyone accused in the affair. Her lawyers rejected the accusations on Tuesday evening as legally unfounded. “Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is determined to assert her rights and contest this decision,” they said.
The proceedings against Nicolas Sarkozy in the so-called Libya affair have been ongoing since October 2023. It concerns the statements of the French-Lebanese businessman Ziad Takieddine, who claimed to have handed over suitcases full of cash from Gaddafi’s coffers to the politician in 2006 and 2007. Because he later surprisingly retracted his statement, the judiciary opened another investigation three years ago. This is intended to clarify whether the main witness for the prosecution was bribed to revise his incriminating statement.
The conservative politician Sarkozy was French President from 2007 to 2012. Since 2008 he has been married for the third time to the singer Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.
