25 years ago, in February 1999, Marshall Bruce Mathers III, Eminem’s real name, had his breakthrough. He released the album “The Slim Shady LP”. After a quarter of a century, his twelfth album is now out, which apparently buries his alter ego “Slim Shady”.
His first single release at the end of May 2024 already showed that he will remain true to his usual style. A complex multi-syllabic internal rhyme technique with a lot of humor and irony. At 51, Eminem is still far from reaching his music retirement. But the path to decades of star status and success led him over many obstacles.
Eminem never lost sight of his goal
Growing up in the American underclass surrounded by drugs and crime, he fought his way to the top of the rap scene. Setbacks, relationship problems, the suicide of his uncle in his early years, who was said to have been a close confidant and father substitute for the young Eminem, did not let him lose sight of his goal. And even a flopped debut album called “Infinite” in 1996 did not deter him from the path that was supposed to lead the young white rapper to the Olympus of rap music.
