Universal+the premium channel package with thousands of hours of on-demand content from NBCUniversal, will premiere the highly anticipated family thriller on July 16, Apples Never Fall.
The series focuses on the seemingly perfect Delaney family consisting of former tennis coaches Stan (Sam Neill) and Joy (Annette Bening), who have sold their academy and are ready to begin what should be the golden years of their lives.
While they wait to spend time with their four grown children (Alison Brie, Jake Lacy, Conor Merrigan-Turner and Essie Randles), everything changes when a wounded young woman knocks on their door, bringing them the excitement they’ve been missing. But when Joy suddenly disappears, her children are forced to examine their parents’ seemingly “squeaky-clean” marriage, while their family’s darkest secrets begin to surface.
Apples Never Fall is the latest of the best-selling novels of Lianne Moriarty and his third book to be adapted for a television series.
Given the immense success of previous small screen adaptations, including Big Little Liesstarring Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoonand Nine Perfect Strangers (also starring Kidman), Apples Never Fall promises to follow in the footsteps of its predecessors.
Like Moriarty’s other novels, the story is written from multiple points of view and is packed with exciting twists and turns. This means that it cannot be categorized into a specific genre, as it navigates a myriad of emotions that will lead the audience to experience multiple experiences.
Although the series was filmed entirely in Australia, it was not shot in Sydney as Moriarty’s novel tells it. For the television version, filming took place in sunny Queensland, although the Delaneys live in the exclusive Palm Beach area of Miami.

Is Apples Never Fall based on a true story?
Although Apples Never Fall is a fictional account, Moriarty has admitted that the story is inspired by some real events.
In an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, The author said she was heavily inspired by true crime podcasts she listened to during the pandemic..
“Sadly, there are multiple cases where a woman goes missing and the husband is the prime suspect in her murder. He is invariably described as a loving father and it got me thinking about how I would feel if my mother went missing and everyone said my father had possibly murdered her.”
Moriarty has also spoken of being inspired by certain news stories, adding: “I read an article in the paper about an elderly couple who let a young woman into their home who claimed to have been a victim of domestic violence and had committed a crime as a result. I was intrigued by the idea that the poor elderly couple thought they were doing the right thing by letting her in.”
