Scholz and Baerbock are shocked: Scholz and Baerbock are so shocked

The assassination attempt on Donald Trump has caused dismay around the world. Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock are also shocked.

The cowardly assassination attempt on US presidential candidate Donald Trump (78) in Butler in the US federal state of Pennsylvania is causing a stir and has also left German top politicians unmoved. Trump, who was hit in the ear by a bullet, survived the incident and has since been able to leave a hospital after receiving first aid. The Secret Service has since confirmed that the assassin was killed. A visitor to the campaign event was also killed.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz (66, SPD) spoke out early on Sunday morning and condemned the attack in clear terms, in German and English. The SPD politician called the attack “despicable”. He wished Donald Trump a speedy recovery: “My thoughts are also with the people who were affected by the attack. Such acts of violence threaten democracy.”

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (43, Alliance 90/The Greens) also contacted X immediately. She said she was “deeply shocked” by the news of the assassination attempt on Trump: “Violence must never become a means of political conflict – no matter what the reason.” In democracies, elections are decided by ballot papers and not by weapons. Her thoughts are with the victims of the attack in these dark hours: “I wish Donald Trump and the other injured a speedy recovery.”

Ursula von der Leyen also expresses her dismay

The President of the EU Commission also said she was “deeply shocked”.

“I wish Donald Trump a speedy recovery and express my condolences to the family of the innocent victim,” said the CDU politician. Political violence has no place in a democracy, von der Leyen continued.
