A judge appointed by Donald Trump has dropped proceedings against the former US president.
Donald Trump (78) will probably no longer have to answer to a court in Florida for illegally taking secret government documents. The judge in charge, Aileen Cannon, who was once appointed by Trump, has announced that the proceedings against the former President of the United States will be discontinued. The decision was based on concerns about the allegedly illegal appointment of special investigator Jack Smith in the case.
Trump’s side had requested that the lawsuit against the former president, who had pleaded “not guilty” in the case about a year ago, be dismissed. In the summer of 2023, the now 78-year-old was accused on numerous counts of having illegally and intentionally taken boxes to his private Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida after his term in office, some of which were said to have contained secret US government documents.
According to US reports, it is currently considered likely that the prosecution will appeal Cannon’s decision.
Secret documents in the bathroom
CNN, among others, reported at the time, citing the complaint, that the documents contained information about US nuclear weapons and military activities of the United States and other countries. Trump had stored the boxes on the property in a bathroom and shower, in his bedroom and in a kind of ballroom where events were also held.
In another case, Trump was recently the first former US president to be convicted of a crime in New York. He was found guilty in a trial for concealing a hush money payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels (45). The sentence is to be announced in September.
