Musician RPS Lanrue (1950-2024) died on Sunday (July 14) in Berlin from the effects of a serious illness. The co-founder of the rock group Ton Steine Scherben (1970-1985) around singer Rio Reiser (1950-1996) was 74 years old. , the guitarist and composer, born Ralph Peter Steitz in Grenoble, France, succumbed to cancer surrounded by his family.
RPS Lanrue and Rio Reiser met as teenagers
As early as 1966, the then teenagers RPS Lanrue and Ralph Christian Möbius, as Rio Reiser was born, played together in a beat cover band. In the same year they founded their first band. In 1967, the two musicians moved from Nieder-Roden in Hesse to West Berlin – Reiser’s birthplace. There, in 1970, the two founded the German-language rock band with the Kiel bassist Kai Sichtermann (born 1951) and Wolfgang Seidel (born 1949, drums).
After the end of Ton Steine Scherben, Lanrue managed the band’s record label, David Volksmund Produktion, in Fresenhagen, North Friesland. He continued to make music with Rio Reiser, recorded his solo albums (“Junimond”) with him and performed in his live band. The two last performed together in 1988 in East Berlin.

RPS Lanrue leaves behind, among others, his wife and his daughter. The latter reported: “My dear dad died on Sunday night at home surrounded by his loved ones after a serious illness. Dad, we will miss you very much,” wrote musician Ella Josephine Ebsen. She shared a series of charming old family photos and quoted the lyrics of the song “Ich geh weg” (1975) by Ton Steine Scherben.
In a story, she also shared a joint farewell greeting to “Papa, Uncle Lalü, Grandpa Lula” – one of the photos also shows the musician with his grandchild.
