Trial against Alec Baldwin discontinued: Gunsmith wants to get out of prison

After Alec Baldwin’s trial was unexpectedly dropped, the already convicted gunsmith now also wants to get out of prison.

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed (27) is demanding that the judges overturn her conviction after the trial against Hollywood star Alec Baldwin (66) was unexpectedly discontinued on Friday. In April, the gunsmith responsible for the set of the film “Rust” was sentenced to 18 months in prison for negligent homicide.

Procedural errors by the prosecution led to the discontinuation of the Baldwin trial

In October 2021, 42-year-old Ukrainian camerawoman Halyna Hutchins (1979-2021) was fatally wounded by a bullet from a gun held by Baldwin while filming the western. Why the gun was loaded with live ammunition remains unclear to this day.

Alec Baldwin will not face criminal charges for the fatal shooting after a court in Santa Fe, New Mexico, ended the trial because of a prosecution error. Baldwin’s case collapsed when it was revealed that a retired police officer had given investigators a stash of bullets on March 6. Information about those bullets, which may have been the source of the fatal bullet, was never shared with Baldwin’s defense team.

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed also affected by prosecutorial misconduct

the “Rust” set designer now claims she was subjected to the same prosecutorial misconduct that caused Baldwin’s trial to collapse last week. In a motion filed on July 16, her attorney, Jason Bowles, said he had received significant evidence since her conviction that should have been disclosed before the trial.

Bowles also requested that Gutierrez-Reed be released from prison and that special prosecutor Kari Morrissey be removed from the case due to misconduct. District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies has expressed her continued support for Morrissey.

Last Friday, Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer ruled that the state’s withholding of evidence justified dismissing Baldwin’s manslaughter trial without prejudice. “How can Ms. Gutierrez-Reed’s case be any different, with this proven litany of serious misuse of evidence?” Bowles argued in his motion. “The state’s deliberate withholding of crucial evidence has compromised the integrity of the entire judicial process.”
