People: Rose McGowan: I don’t want to fight for the rest of my life

With her accusations against former Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, Rose McGowan helped set the MeToo movement in motion. She does not see herself as an activist.

US actress Rose McGowan, whose accusations helped spark the Weinstein scandal, does not see herself as an activist. “I am a whistleblower, not an activist. I don’t want to fight for the rest of my life,” said the 50-year-old on the sidelines of the “Women100” network meeting in Berlin. She wanted to change people’s opinions and attitudes, but she also had her own life to live.

McGowan (“Charmed”) was one of the women who first made public accusations against former Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein. This sparked the MeToo debate in 2017, in which women around the world made accusations of sexism public.

Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison for sexual offenses in 2020. At the end of April, an appeals court surprisingly overturned the verdict due to procedural errors. The prosecution wants to reopen the case. “I admire the women who testified and had to go through this incredible trauma,” said McGowan.

Weinstein was also convicted in another rape case in Los Angeles in 2022. He remains serving a 16-year prison sentence in California.

McGowan attended the “Frauen100” network meeting, which is celebrating its three-year anniversary, with other women from politics, media, business, sports and entertainment. Among those in attendance were actress Katja Riemann, CDU politician Julia Klöckner and presenter Nazan Eckes.
