Shiloh Jolie’s name change: This is why she publicly drops the name Pitt

Shiloh Jolie has dropped her father Brad Pitt’s surname. Her lawyer is now commenting on the name change process.

After several media outlets reported that the daughter of Angelina Jolie (49) and Brad Pitt (60) wants to drop her father’s last name, a lawyer for Shiloh Jolie (18) has now commented on her decision and her actions in “Magazine”. Previously, it had been reported, among other things, that the 18-year-old had published an ad in a major newspaper to announce that she no longer wanted to be called Pitt.

Lawyer explains Shiloh’s actions

Shiloh, who actually bore both of her famous parents’ surnames since birth, applied for the name change on May 27 – her 18th birthday. Shortly afterwards, this was made public with a legal notice in the “Los Angeles Times”. Her lawyer Peter Levine has now explained why his client took this step.

In his statement, he also appealed to the conscience of the reporting media: “The media should be more cautious in their reporting – especially when reporting on a young adult who has made an independent and important decision after painful events and is merely following a legal process,” said the lawyer.

He also clarified: “Shiloh Jolie has not placed an ‘ad’ announcing a name change and all press reports claiming this are inaccurate.” As her lawyer, he is obligated to publish a legal notice. California law requires this of anyone who wants to change their name. “This legal notice was published in the Los Angeles Times as required.”

A family law attorney had previously explained the procedure for a name change under California law in an interview with “People”: “She has to file a formal petition with the court to change her name. And she has to file an ad four weeks in a row before the hearing is scheduled, and she has to notify both of her parents in writing.”

Difficult circumstances since her parents separated

Brad Pitt is reportedly still in a divorce battle with ex-wife Angelina Jolie. An insider told People magazine in early June that the actor was “informed and upset” about Shiloh’s official request to change his name.

Pitt and Jolie have a total of six children together: Maddox (22), Zahara (19) and Pax (20) were adopted by the couple. Shiloh and the twins Knox and Vivienne (16) are biological children. Jolie and Pitt met and fell in love while filming “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” in 2005. After getting engaged in 2012, the couple married in France in 2014. In September 2016, Angelina Jolie filed for divorce. There are still legal disputes today, for example over a former shared vineyard in the south of France.
