In the end, the pressure was probably too great: After weeks of criticism of his person – even from his own ranks – US President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he would not run again as the Democratic candidate in the November election. “Although I wanted to run for re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country if I forego this and concentrate on my duties for the remainder of my presidency,” the 81-year-old announced in an official letter. Shortly afterwards, Biden announced that he would support his Vice President Kamala Harris as a possible presidential candidate in the race against Republican Donald Trump.
Biden’s decision not only caused a stir in the political world, but also attracted comment from numerous celebrities. Stars such as actress Jamie Lee Curtis and musician John Legend praised Biden’s achievements for the country and at the same time expressed their support for Kamala Harris. However, it is not yet clear whether the 59-year-old will actually run against Trump. The Democrats will choose their final presidential candidate at their party convention in mid-August.
