US singer Evelyn Thomas had the international hit “High Energy” in the 1980s. Now she has died at the age of 70.
Following the news of the death of Evelyn Thomas (1953-2024), fans and colleagues are saying goodbye to the singer. One of the comments on a post by the daughter of the late US star, who remembered her mother with a series of personal photos, reads: “She was the best, I danced many moves to her music” and “I’m so sorry… Your mum is gone, but her music will never die…”. Another user explained: “I’ve always loved Evelyn’s music, it is connected to my memories of the 80s.”
Evelyn Thomas, who helped shape the Hi-NRG scene in the 1980s, turned 70. The Chicago-born singer had a major international hit in 1984 with the single “High Energy.” In 2022, Rolling Stone magazine included the song in its list of the 200 best dance songs of all time.
Explorer Ian Levine says goodbye
Her producer Ian Levine (71), who discovered her in the 1970s, said: “It is difficult for me to accept that my lifelong protégé has really left us.” He added: “Her music will outlast us all.”
Ian Levine further explained in his farewell post that he had not had any contact with Thomas since the last recording session in 2009. However, a few months ago she “reached out to me in love” because she knew she was dying.
When Levine and his co-author of “High Energy”, Fiachra Trench (82), found out about it, they immediately dropped everything to write a final song for Thomas, entitled “Inspirational”. However, the singer was already too ill to record the song, and now her daughter Kimberly wants to record the song as a memory of her mother.
