Flippers singer Olaf Malolepski has spoken about his wife Sonja’s health three years after she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
It was a shock: In the year of their golden wedding anniversary, pop star Olaf Malolepski (78) revealed that his wife Sonja (73) had breast cancer in 2021. Three years later, the musician from the former pop band “Die Flippers” has revealed how she is doing today.
“She is receiving good medical treatment. She is doing a world-class job,” says the singer with relief. “She can live to be 100 years old.” The Magdeburg native is in excellent health. When he gets up in the morning, Malolepski has to “stretch for five minutes, then I’m fit again.” What keeps him young is “having a lot of joy in life, even when it hurts and aches. You have to start the day positively.”
“Complications arose”
After the cult band (“But there’s only one of you for me”) broke up in 2011, Olaf Malolepski continued solo as Olaf the Flipper. In an interview with the “Bild” newspaper in 2021, the singer shocked everyone with his cancer diagnosis: “Unfortunately, Sonja didn’t tolerate the chemotherapy at all. There were complications.” He was “very worried.” “But we remain confident, my wife is incredibly strong. We stick together as a family,” Malolepski emphasized. The 73-year-old also suffers from Cushing’s syndrome, which leads to an excessive concentration of cortisol in the blood.
Their recipe for marriage after more than 53 years together is communication: “That there is no sulking. If we ever disagree, we sort it out immediately and say: Come on, we’ll get it sorted out,” advises the 78-year-old singer, who has also been performing at Ballermann for two and a half years. “I can’t stand it when people are angry for days. That doesn’t happen with us.”
The couple has been married since 1971 and has two adult children.
