He paved the way for many musicians after him, and now John Mayall has died. The Brit was 90 years old.
Music legend John Mayall (1933-2024) has died. The British blues musician, who with his influential band Bluesbreakers was considered a pioneer for stars such as Eric Clapton (79) and Mick Fleetwood (77), has died at the age of 90. The musician died on Monday (July 22), surrounded by his family, in his house in California. “Health problems that forced John to end his epic touring career” have “ultimately led to peace” for one of the greatest live musicians in the world, the article continues.
John Mayall turned young talents into big stars
John Mayall, who was born near Manchester in 1933, was a singer and played piano, keyboard, guitar and harmonica. He earned his reputation as the “father of British blues” because he promoted talented young lead guitarists, among other things.
The Bluesbreakers included rising stars such as Eric Clapton, who later founded the band Cream and eventually became a very successful solo artist, Peter Green (1946-2020), who co-founded Fleetwood Mac, and Mick Taylor (75), who was brought in by the Rolling Stones from Mayall’s band. Mick Fleetwood and John McVie (78) were also there and later found themselves in Fleetwood Mac.
John Mayall performed with the Bluesbreakers until old age
John Mayall was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2024. His 1966 album “Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton” is considered one of the best British blues albums of all time. Until 2021, John Mayall regularly toured the USA, Europe and Australia with the Bluesbreakers. The musician then retired from the strenuous touring life for reasons of age.
