Olympic Games: Macron: Dion’s performance at opening ceremony would be great

There has been speculation for some time. Now France’s president is also fueling the rumors about a performance by Céline Dion at the Olympic opening ceremony.

French President Emmanuel Macron wants singer Céline Dion to be the star guest at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games on Friday in Paris. It would be “great news” if the Canadian were to perform at the big ceremony in the heart of the French capital, said Macron (46) in an interview with the TV channel France 2, “because she is a great artist.”

There has been speculation for days about an appearance by the singer, who suffers from a rare autoimmune disease. The 56-year-old is currently said to be in the Olympic city. “It seems she has arrived in Paris,” said Macron. However, he did not want to reveal any further details about the opening ceremony because of the surprise effect.

France’s acting sports minister, Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, was a little more specific. “You saw that she is in Paris. That is no coincidence,” Oudéa-Castéra said on the TF1 channel about the celebrated singer. However, the minister did not reveal whether Dion would actually sing. “There are a multitude of possible roles in an opening ceremony.”

Dion announced in December 2022 that she had been diagnosed with so-called stiff person syndrome. The disease can cause muscle cramps anywhere in the body, causing her hands or feet to freeze, she said in a recent TV interview. She has problems walking and singing. The “My Heart Will Go On” singer had to cancel all dates of her “Courage World Tour” in Europe planned for 2023 and 2024.
