The world is talking about the Olympics – but not just about the sport. It’s the moments outside of the competition that are going viral on the internet.
Sport can quickly become a secondary issue at the Olympic Games in Paris. Because some snapshots, such as flying surfers or even derogatory coffee comments, become the topic of conversation on social media. These Olympic scenes are currently going viral.
The flying surfer
Since last Monday, everyone has been talking about Brazilian surfer Gabriel Medina (30), who has not only shone due to his score of 9.90 out of a possible 10 points and his entry into the quarter-finals. The surfer caught a brutal wave. During his ride, numerous impressive snapshots were taken, which he then uploaded. One of them shows his jump. The snapshot by French photographer Jérôme Brouillet makes Medina look as if he were standing in mid-air – one of the most spectacular photos from Paris so far. Medina’s Instagram post now has more than six million likes and around 120,000 comments.
Swimmer finds out baby’s gender
US swimmer Ryan Murphy (29), who won the bronze medal in the 100-meter backstroke on Monday, had a surprise waiting for him in the audience. His pregnant wife Bridget sat down there and held up a sign with a special message: “Ryan, it’s a girl!” she wrote by hand in English – and thus revealed the baby’s gender to her husband for the first time. Murphy then hugged his sweetheart and gave her a kiss on the lips. These snapshots are also currently making the rounds on , X and various TV channels.
Bad coffee meets Italian palate
When bad coffee meets an Italian palate, derogatory comments are not far away. An Italian television reporter from public broadcaster RAI2 vented his anger while covering an 800-meter swim: “In the press room there is a coffee that can compete with the water of the Seine,” he complained, comparing his brew to the currently polluted water of the French river. “It is probably made with the same substances and with the same water, which is then mixed with low-quality instant coffee.” The video has spread rapidly, with the video now having almost three million views.
Pommel horse gymnast or Superman?
Olympic gymnast Stephen Nedoroscik (25) is also currently causing a lot of laughter online. While his US teammates have to perform in several disciplines, the 25-year-old only has to shine on the pommel horse, because the gymnast is not qualified for any other apparatus. So he likes to use his rest periods to take a nap on the sidelines. Then the big moment: the pommel horse was the final discipline and also the last chance to win a medal. Nedoroscik promptly ripped off his glasses and delivered an impressive performance that brought the US gymnastics team a medal for the first time in 16 years. is he now being compared to Superman, or rather to his alter ego Clark Kent, who wears similar glasses when he is not wearing his blue and red superhero costume.
“Bob the Cap Catcher”
Another incident occurred during the women’s 100-meter breaststroke on Sunday morning. US swimmer Emma Webber had lost her swimming cap in the pool. An unknown man quickly intervened, walking from the stands towards the pool in a pair of skimpy neon-colored floral swim trunks. Without causing any chaos, he elegantly dove into the water, grabbed the submerged swimming cap and left the pool again – and at an impressive speed. Applause and cheers from the audience were not long in coming. In the NBC commentary booth, he was simply called “Bob the Cap Catcher.”
