Excitement over kiss between Macron and his sports minister

The relationship between Macron and his sports minister appears to be cordial. But a kiss from Ámelie Oudéa-Castéra on Macron’s cheek during the Olympic Games is something even the French find a little too intimate.

The Olympic Games have been running in Paris since Friday – with great interest, of course, from President Emmanuel Macron and Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra. It was only days later that a photo from the opening ceremony became known – and it stirred up emotions: a kiss from the Sports Minister at the opening ceremony. She pulled the President towards her in a way that seemed to express more than just her joy at the start of the Games.

First, the website of the magazine Le Figaro reports on the “strange kiss”. It quotes some reactions on X, formerly Twitter, and asks indignantly “What kind of kiss is this between Oudéa and Macron??!”.

And indeed, the photo does not look as if it is just a case of celebrating a professional success with joy. “Madame Figaro” quotes, among others, who finds the photo indecent, “not worthy of a president and a minister!”

Others react more casually to the kiss

A little more casual and just speaks of a “passionate kiss” in the “exuberance of joy”.

The reaction of Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, who is standing nearby and can also be seen in the picture, is interesting. It seems as if he is uncomfortable with the intimacy of his government colleagues. But of course, a lot can be read into photos.

According to media reports, Macron responded to this kiss with a more reserved peck, as is customary in France. One thing is clear: there have been no political reactions so far. Both Macron and Oudéa-Castéra have remained silent about the kiss.

Macron gives Oudéa-Castéra a normal kiss on the cheek

Maybe there are just too many. The next day, the two of them kissed again: In the picture, you can see Macron hugging his sports minister – this time out of joy at the French team winning the gold medal in rugby sevens.
