“Harry Potter” star Miriam Margolyes: She is now “registered as severely disabled”

“Harry Potter” star Miriam Margolyes has been battling health problems for years. Now she revealed that she can hardly walk anymore.

“Harry Potter” fans know the British-Australian actress Miriam Margolyes (83) as the herbalist Pomona Sprout, whom she played in several parts of the magic school saga. As she gets older, she is increasingly struggling with health problems – which could now finally put an end to her long acting career.

Actress was “registered as disabled”

In an interview with Closer magazine, Margolyes gave an update on her current health, which sounds quite worrying. In the conversation, she gave insight into her struggle with spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal canal that puts pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. “I can’t walk very well and I’m registered as disabled,” she revealed to the magazine.

This is increasingly turning her usual everyday life upside down. “I use all kinds of aids,” says Margolyes. “I have two sticks and a walker, and they are so boring, but I now have a mobility scooter, which is a lot of fun.” She tries to take her disability with as much humor as possible. “It’s like having a new toy,” she said, laughing about her new mobility scooter. “It’s very good for shopping because it has a basket – and I really enjoy whizzing around with it.”

In 2023, the actress had to undergo heart surgery in which she had a cow’s aortic valve transplanted. In a statement last July, she expressed her fear that she would die from her illnesses “within the next five or six years.”
