We all know Kate Winslet lounging half-naked on the “Titanic” sofa while being drawn by Leonardo DiCaprio. But how does the actress feel about her body?
Being happy with your body and appreciating yourself is something you can learn. That’s what happened to actress Kate Winslet, who had her big acting breakthrough in 1997 with the famous film “Titanic” at the age of 21.
From one moment to the next, the young woman, who had dreamed of becoming an actress since she was a child, was known all over the world. And so was her body, which she presented in this famous scene lying half-naked on a sofa. A scene that caused a lot of talk in the 1990s. At that time, the ideal of female beauty was “size zero”: extremely thin and without curves, like Christina Aguilera, Paris Hilton and many others. Kate Winslet did not fit the ideal.

Especially as a young woman, the constant conversation about the curves of your own body is not easy to deal with. In an interview with “Harper’s Bazaar,” Winslet said that the criticism about her figure at the time was wearing her down and even drove her to an eating disorder. “I was often dissected in the media and that really affected me. Think about all the years in my twenties when I was different shapes and sizes,” reflects the 48-year-old.
She is happy that the ideal of beauty and women’s self-confidence have changed over the last three decades since “Titanic”. “It’s really relieving to see that women are much more accepting of themselves these days and no longer allow themselves to be judged by others,” says Winslet.
And although her parents always gave her self-confidence when it came to her dream of acting, supported her and encouraged her, Kate Winslet was also given a false image of beauty during her childhood.
In an interview, she talked about a formative situation: “I don’t know anyone my age who has experienced their mother looking in the mirror and saying, ‘I look good!’ My mother never did that. She always thought, ‘Oh God, I don’t know if I can wear that. Do I look like a hippie, does my butt look big?’ We waste so much time criticizing ourselves and I will never do that again.”
These days, Winslet is happy with who she is and when asked how she would describe herself, she replies: “The first word that comes to mind is ‘open,’ and the second is ‘grounded.’ It’s very hard to stay grounded. I managed it, but it was a struggle.”
