War in Ukraine: Ukraine: Border guards prevent almost 50 men from escaping

Many Ukrainian men are not prepared to fight against the Russian army. Now the Ukrainian border guards have prevented a record number of conscripts from fleeing to neighboring Moldova.

In the south of the country, the Ukrainian border guards prevented 48 men who were conscripts from escaping to the Moldovan region of Transnistria, which is controlled by pro-Russian forces, in a truck. The number represents a new record, the authority said. Drone footage shows several groups of men climbing onto the back of the truck one after the other, which is later stopped by border guards.

The arrests reportedly took place in the Odessa region near the village of Tschorna, a good ten kilometers from the border. The men are said to have paid the escape helper the equivalent of more than 3,300 euros each. In addition to a fine for attempting to cross the border illegally, they now face conscription into the Ukrainian army.

Ukraine has been fighting against the Russian invasion for almost two and a half years. Martial law applies in the country and mobilization has been ordered. Forced recruitment is the order of the day. Conscript men between the ages of 18 and 60 can only leave the country in exceptional cases. Despite this, many try to do so across the green border or with forged documents. Several dozen have already died while fleeing the war-torn Eastern European country.
