Marius Borg Høiby: Crown Prince Haakon reacts to the arrest

Crown Prince Haakon has commented on the arrest of his stepson Marius Borg Høiby. The heir to the throne speaks of a “serious matter”.

Norwegian Crown Prince Haakon has reacted publicly for the first time to the arrest of his stepson Marius Borg Høiby. On the sidelines of the Olympic Games in Paris, where he visited Norwegian athletes in the Olympic Village on Wednesday (7 August), the heir to the throne spoke of a “serious matter”, according to Norwegian broadcaster “TV 2”.

Haakon was actually planning to travel to the French capital with Crown Princess Mette-Marit. However, she stayed at home after the incident involving her son. “In our family, as in all families, it is sometimes important to be there,” said Haakon. “This time it was me who went while she stayed at home.” The Norwegian palace had announced at short notice that Mette-Marit would “postpone her departure to Paris for the time being.”

When asked about his stepson Marius, Haakon said, according to “TV 2”: “It is a serious matter when the police are involved, as they are. At the same time, I do not think it is right for me to get involved in the case now.” It is clear “that a case like this also affects me,” added the Crown Prince.

This is why Marius Borg Høiby was arrested

According to Norwegian media reports, Marius Borg Høiby was taken into custody by police last Sunday after an incident with a woman in an apartment in Oslo. The police confirmed to the newspaper “Se og Hør” that he had been arrested and charged with assault. The arrested person was “later released from custody”. “Se og Hør” also writes that the woman, who is said to be between 20 and 30 years old, was taken to hospital with a concussion.

The lawyer of the 27-year-old, who was married to Haakon before Mette-Marit’s marriage, spoke to the Norwegian newspaper “Dagbladet” about the case and also confirmed the charge of assault. He also stressed that it was important that the trial was allowed to take its course and that the media respected his client’s privacy and peace of mind. “It is up to the courts whether the case ends up there.”

He had a relationship with the victim

It is not yet known who exactly the woman is that Marius Borg Høiby is said to have used violence against. However, according to Norwegian media, the Oslo police apparently confirmed in a press release that there is or was a relationship between the accused and the alleged victim.
