Eli Roth’s new film is based on the popular video game of the same name and stars Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Jamie Lee Curtis.
Released in 2009, the video game “Borderlands” immediately captivated gamers around the world to the point that it quickly became a saga. Now comes the film version directed by Eli Roth (Hostel) and Tim Miller (Deadpool).
Surprisingly, the film features a cast of proven Hollywood talent. The Oscar winners Cate Blanchett like Lilith and Jamie Lee Curtis like Dr. Patricia Tannis, Kevin Hart like Roland, Jack Black lending his voice to the robot Claptrap, Ariana Greenblatt like Tiny Tina and Florian Munteanu like Krieg.
Lilith, a vile bounty hunter, reluctantly returns to Pandora, the most chaotic planet in the galaxy. Her mission is to find the daughter of Atlas, the most despicable and powerful being in the universe. She will form an unexpected team of misfits: Roland, Tiny Tina, Krieg, Tannis and Claptrap. Together, these unlikely heroes must fight against aliens and dangerous bandits to discover one of Pandora’s greatest secrets. The fate of the universe is at stake.
What’s wrong with Borderlands
Hollywood has a pretty bad track record when it comes to adapting video games to the big screen. The 90s Super Mario Bros., Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat: Annihilationthe saga of resident Evil Since the 2000s and many other examples bear witness to this. However, there are exceptions, the recent one Five Nights at Freddy’s and the HBO adaptation of The Last of Us They open up credit for the possibility of a good adaptation, this is not the case Borderlands.
In the game, you can choose between several of the main characters or team up with friends to play in co-op mode. The movie, for obvious reasons, is limited to just one mission, and that makes sense; the problem is how uninteresting it all is.
Borderlands It is nothing more than a pastiche that takes elements from Star Wars, Mad Max and Guardians of the Galaxy.. Blanchett is tasked with explaining much of Eridian’s awkward backstory via her voiceover at the beginning, after which she hastily quips, “Yeah, that sounds like crazy nonsense, right?” Apparently not even the filmmakers can swallow the film’s plot. Only Blanchett and her talent are capable of making even the most ridiculous character sound convincing..
Roth tries to maintain the irreverent tone throughout the rest of the film, but it doesn’t really succeed much and clichés abound throughout the rest of the film. In conclusion, Borderlands can be an option for fans of the video game and for the unwary who only go by the name and background of its protagonists.
