“Vampire Diaries” star Nina Dobrev suffered a bad bike accident in May. Now she is slowly recovering – even at the Olympics.
Don’t rush into things: Nina Dobrev (35) is thinking in small steps when it comes to her recovery. In May, the “Vampire Diaries” star shattered her left knee in a motorcycle accident. In an update on her recovery to “Entertainment Weekly” and the “, she reported progress, but also said: “We still have a long way to go.” To get her mind off things, she recently visited the Olympic Games in Paris – of course with her partner and three-time Olympic champion Shaun White (37).
First dirt bike trip badly punished
The Bulgarian-born athlete is very sporty herself. And since she started dating the three-time Olympic snowboard champion, sport has probably become an even more natural part of her daily routine. In May, Dobrev ventured into sporting terrain that she should have avoided. She got on a so-called dirt bike and suffered a broken knee and a broken shin. “I lost control during a wheelie, accelerated too much and landed on my left leg. Then my leg just buckled at knee height.” Her cruciate ligament and meniscus were torn and Dobrev began a months-long rehab phase.
“We still have a long way to go”
She has now been recovering from the aftermath of the devastating accident for three and a half months. “I think I’m doing pretty well,” Dobrev told People magazine on Wednesday. “I’m a little ahead of schedule in terms of healing, but it’s still a very long process.” The doctors were “quite surprised” at her progress so far. At the same time, she was not initially aware that healing could take up to a year: “So there’s still a long way to go,” she said. “And often people re-injure themselves at this point in the healing process because they feel fine. And then they start doing normal things. So I have to remind myself that I’m still in rehab and I still have a little bit of time ahead of me.”
Rehab trip with Shaun White to Paris
With such prospects, a little variety is good, Dobrev and partner Shaun White probably thought. So the star actress and the mega athlete quickly packed their suitcases and crutches to watch some competitions at the Olympic Games in Paris. Among the many celebrities currently at the Olympics, the dream couple, who have been together since 2020, were also there. Of course, the handicapped Dobrev reached her limits here too and had to rely on gentleman Shaun White: “In Paris, many streets are closed because of the Olympics. So you have to walk from venue to venue” – theoretically. White quickly organized a wheelchair for her and took over the nursing care himself: “He was by my side the whole time and looked after me.” Sounds like a successful excursion into the world of sport and the city of love, which must have inspired the 35-year-old during her rehabilitation phase.
