Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy is one of the most successful productions of all time. However, the actors saw little of the revenue, or at least that’s what Cate Blanchett says.
Hollywood actress Cate Blanchett says she was poorly paid for her role in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. The 55-year-old, who plays the elf Galadriel in the fantasy films, spoke about salaries on the show “Watch What Happens Live” and ironically criticized her industry.
Moderator Andy Cohen asked the Oscar winner which film she had received the biggest check for and guessed “Lord of the Rings”. “Are you kidding?” Blanchett replied. “I basically got free sandwiches.” She was also allowed to keep her elf ears.
The “Lord of the Rings” trilogy (2001 to 2003) by director Peter Jackson is one of the most successful productions of all time. The three films together grossed almost three billion US dollars. At the time, however, it was far from common for actors to receive a share of the revenue, explained Blanchett. She also said that women in Hollywood “don’t get as much money as you think.”
Blanchett is not the first to talk about her low pay for successful films. Legolas actor Orlando Bloom also said in an interview in 2019 that he only received $175,000 for all three films combined.
