The Danish handball players were delighted to win gold on Sunday – and with them King Frederik and Prince Christian, who were also there.
The Danish men’s handball team won the match for Olympic gold on Sunday afternoon (11 August) against the German team by a clear 39:26, thus winning Denmark’s second gold medal on the last day of the games. The team could also count on a special lucky charm in the audience: Denmark’s King Frederik X (56) was at the Stade Pierre Mauroy in Lille with his son Prince Christian (18).
Father and son keep their fingers crossed for handball players
Before the game, , which showed Frederik and Christian in the stands in front of the pitch, said: “We will be sitting in the stands when the men’s semi-finals come around. Let’s hope Denmark can finish the Olympics with a gold medal.”
The fingers crossed apparently worked: After the game, the palace of the father-son duo and the players shared photos, including one of them clenching their winning fists. The account wrote: “Congratulations for the gold!”
King Frederik X was already in Paris at the beginning of the Olympic Games and, together with his wife Queen Mary (52), visited athletes in the Norwegian House and the opening ceremony on July 26. At the beginning of August, Queen Mary was there when Cathrine Laudrup-Dufour, Nanna Skodborg Merrald and Daniel Bachmann Andersen won the silver medal in the dressage team competition.
