More than a dozen films are in the running for the foreign Oscars for Germany. Among them is a work by Mohammed Rassulof, an Iranian who fled to Germany.
13 films have been shortlisted for the German Oscar submission. Among them is the new film by Mohammed Rassulof, an Iranian who fled to Germany a few months ago. “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” is a German co-production and tells the story of the effects of the political protests in Iran on a family.
A film with Sandra Hüller was also submitted: “Zwei zu eins” by Natja Brunckhorst. A jury will discuss which work Germany will submit as a candidate for nomination for the best international film on August 21 and 22 in Munich. This was announced by German Films, the foreign representative of German film.
This is just one of several preliminary stages before it is announced on January 17th which films will actually be nominated for an Oscar for best international film.
Films submitted by Matthias Glasner and Andreas Dresen
Among the possible German candidates are the drama “Sterben” by Matthias Glasner, which has already been awarded the German Film Prize in Gold, “Dieermittlung” by RP Kahl, “In Liebe, Eure Hilde” by Andreas Dresen and “Im toten Winkel” by Ayşe Polat.
Other applicants for the German candidate are “The Glory of Life” (Georg Maas, Judith Kaufmann), “The Unyielding 2 – Good Morning, You Beautiful Ones” (Torsten Körner). “Leader and Seducer” (Joachim A. Lang). “Hollywoodgate” (Ibrahim Nash’at), “Sad Jokes” (Fabian Stumm), “Stella. A Life” (Kilian Riedhof) and “Silence” (Erik Borner).
In the spring, the German entry “The Teachers’ Room” by Ilker Çatak, which was nominated for best international film, went home empty-handed at the Oscars. The British production “The Zone of Interest” by Jonathan Glazer won the Oscar in that category.
Four German films have won the award so far
Last year, however, the German literary adaptation “All Quiet on the Western Front” by director Edward Berger not only won the Oscar for best international film, but also three more for cinematography, production design and film music.
The selection of the German entry is a preliminary stage in the race for the foreign Oscar. The shortlist of international applicants will be announced on December 17th. The nominated films will then be chosen from this shortlist. The Oscars will then be awarded on March 2nd (local time, CET in the night of March 3rd).
Only four German productions have won the award for best international film. Apart from “All Quiet on the Western Front”, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck managed to do this in 2007 with the Stasi drama “The Lives of Others”. In 1980, the film adaptation of the novel “The Tin Drum” by Volker Schlöndorff received this award, and in 2003 “Nowhere in Africa” by Caroline Link.
