A US singer accuses pop star Nick Carter of sexual assault. The Backstreet Boys singer files a countersuit for defamation – and makes demands.
Backstreet Boys singer Nick Carter (44) is involved in a civil lawsuit with US singer Melissa Schuman (39). Schuman, former singer of the girl band Dream, went to court in California in April 2023 with allegations of an alleged sexual assault. Now Carter is responding with a countersuit for defamation and demanding damages of $2.5 million, US media reports. Carter accuses the singer of repeatedly making false statements in a blog and in interviews, writes “People.com” citing court documents. He denies all of her allegations.
Schuman had already said in 2017 that Carter had sexually assaulted her in 2003. The singer, who was 22 at the time, invited her to his apartment in Santa Monica, California, when she was 18, and raped her there. Carter denied the allegations at the time. All of the acts were consensual. There was no criminal trial. The case had expired, the public prosecutor’s office announced in 2018. In 2023, the singer then filed a civil lawsuit. She is fighting to make the music business a safer place to work and perform, Schuman wrote on Instagram.
Carter joined the Backstreet Boys in the mid-90s. The five-person band is one of the most successful boy groups in the world. The singer has been married to Lauren Kitt Carter since 2014 and they have three children.
