People: Rob Lowe: Sobered up after family emergency

The US actor faced his alcohol addiction in a rehabilitation clinic in 1990. An incident with his family was his “wake-up call”, he says.

US actor Rob Lowe says he finally faced his alcohol addiction over 30 years ago after abandoning his family. “I remember it like it was yesterday,” the 60-year-old (“Parks and Recreation”) told US magazine “People”.

After his grandfather had a heart attack, his mother left a message on her answering machine begging him to talk. “I couldn’t handle it in the state I was in and had to go to sleep,” Lowe says. He also immediately grabbed a bottle of tequila. “That was the final wake-up call. I’ve been sober ever since.”

According to “People,” Lowe entered a rehabilitation clinic in 1990. Before that, other experiences over the years gradually led him to this step, Lowe says.

His “first glimmer of conscience” was the comedy “Shampoo” with Warren Beatty. “It’s a great film, but in the end he’s a bon vivant, a charming playboy who ends up with nothing.” He also reassessed his life when video footage was leaked in the late 1980s that showed Lowe having sex with two young women. “But what really changed me was that I wasn’t able to be there for my family and myself.”
