People: Ed Sheeran joins Ipswich Town football club

Pop star Ed Sheeran has long been a fan of the English football club and Premier League newcomer. Now he is making his wish come true.

Musician Ed Sheeran (33) is joining the English football club Ipswich Town. He has bought a small share in his hometown club, the pop star announced on Instagram. “It’s every football fan’s dream to own the club you support and I’m so grateful for this opportunity,” he wrote.

The football club in the eastern English county of Suffolk has just been promoted and is now playing in the Premier League. Sheeran (“Perfect”, “Shape of you”) has been supporting the club for a long time and became a shirt sponsor a few years ago. He has been spotted at games in the stadium time and again.

Declaration of love for his homeland

Sheeran wrote that he had lived in Suffolk since he was three years old. He had travelled the world and sometimes felt like an outsider in big cities. Suffolk and Ipswich had always made him feel part of a community and protected.

According to the club, Sheeran’s share in the football club is 1.4 percent. He is not a voting shareholder or a board member, but is simply putting some money into the club that he loves. So people should not contact him about contracts or tactics, Sheeran wrote.
