There have already been several demonstrations against mass tourism this year on Mallorca and elsewhere in Spain. Now the CEO of the travel group Tui has spoken out – and shown understanding.
Tui CEO Sebastian Ebel understands the recent protests against mass tourism on Mallorca. “There are these protests that are directed against certain excessive issues such as rising rents and a lack of living space, rising house prices and traffic volumes,” Ebel told “Bild am Sonntag”. “And we should definitely take that seriously, because we would feel the same way.”
There have been several demonstrations against mass tourism this year on Mallorca and elsewhere in Spain. Critics complain above all about the high cost of living and the lack of affordable housing as a result of the mass influx of holidaymakers.
Local people must determine the extent of tourism
The package tourist goes to a hotel and does not take away anyone’s house or apartment, Ebel continues. “We are trying to keep water consumption very low. Of course it is important to see what motivates people, how much tourism they want, what they don’t want? And ultimately it is the people who live there who decide how much tourism they want.”
Tui has many trips to Mallorca on offer. In December 2023, the tour operator announced that Mallorca was very popular as a booking – and spoke of higher demand than ever that was expected for Mallorca trips this summer.
