Eric Heisserer, who wrote the script for Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival 2, will direct.
Legendary Entertainment has closed a first-look development deal with writer-director Eric Heisserer. One of the first projects Heisserer is developing is an origin story based on the franchise Pacific Rim.
“Eric is a prolific and multi-talented creator whose track record of critical and commercial success speaks for itself. We are thrilled to launch our partnership with Eric, Chronology and Carmen, with a new entry in the epic and globally popular Pacific Rim universe. We are confident that his vision will be an exciting expansion of Legendary’s beloved franchise,” said Jason Clodfelter, president of Legendary Television, in a statement.
What is Pacific Rim about?
The franchise, which comprises two films and two seasons of the anime Netflixsees humans build and operate giant combat robots called Jaegers after they are attacked by various monsters (here called Kaijus) after an interdimensional rift opens at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.
The first film in the franchise was released in 2013 and was directed by Guillermo del Toroand received excellent reviews. Its sequel, Pacific Rim: Uprisingarrived in 2018 directed by Steven S. DeKnight and was much less well received. Netflix released the spin-off anime series Pacific Rim: The Black in 2021 and 2022.
Eric Heisserer is best known for being a screenwriter for the arrival of Denis Villeneuveas well as other films such as Final Destination 5, Lights Out and Bird BoxHe also wrote and executive produced the television series Shadow and Bone.
