Cott Galleryfounded in late 2019 by Gabriel Cottreopens its doors in a new location in San Telmo. Its proposals are related to society and the individual, sociopolitical issues, identity, the environment, body and feminism, reflections on the current situation in which we live.
To this end, it has brought together artists of excellence in contemporary art from different parts of our country who are exhibited on the two floors of the gallery.
On the ground floor Veronica Gomez (Buenos Aires, 1978), artist, teacher, with outstanding exhibitions in our country and abroad, presents “Dangerous Garments”a set of high-level figurative paintings, far from all banality, of those that leave a mark, not only for their formal rigor but because they present questions that the viewer cannot remain passive before his works.
He will try to unravel a world of fables, he will wonder why he titles them as he does, examples: “The boy who devoured identities”, “The Lion King”, “Queen Pulp gathers her army of Lilliputians”his series of “Metaphysical Offal” (Tongue, Lung, Entrails, Mondongo, Liver)” with its appearance of stones in a stripped-down environment, typical of a mysterious space.
To read these paintings you must have a great knowledge of art history. There is always a symbolism in the works of the past, the reason for the inclusion of baroque clothing, the animals that accompanied the characters, often idyllic, very beautiful, other times grotesque with a great satirical charge.
Hence this series of Veronica Gomez requires attention that used to be ten minutes long and today is ten seconds long, like in television commercials. Attention to discover the hidden meaning of its narrative, which according to the canons has been set aside as if it were a mortal sin.
In a thoughtful curatorial text by Juan Cruz PedroniMaster in Aesthetics and Theory of the Arts, points out that “This artist’s work emerges with an ethic that positions artistic work as an inventive task. This standard of conduct is contemporary because it belongs to another time, a past that, with its irruption, cracks the ground of certainties of the deliquescent axiology that governs an area of current artistic practice.”.
Veronica Gomez It also presents a series of pencil-graphite on paper, generally nineteenth-century portraits, women burdened by the principle “a woman’s place is at home,” as well as disturbing images that reflect her alienation.
On the lower floor of the new headquarters, works by prominent artists belonging to the gallery staff have been gathered, whose curatorial text is in charge of Marcos Kramer. Among the names is Fatima Pecci Carou(Buenos Aires, 1984) Graduate in Visual Arts, whose work refers to quotes from art history, popular images from a political perspective, photographic archives, manga with a large dose of humor.
Renata Juncadella (Buenos Aires, 1999), visual artist and photographer, began studying astrology at the age of 14, then came tarot and alchemy. She embraces with a surrealist tone images of magicians, warriors, alchemists, referring to Remedios Varo and Eleonora Carrington. An esoteric, dreamlike world, by very young artists coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the appearance of the Surrealist Manifesto.
Lucila Gradin (Bariloche, 1981, lives in Buenos Aires). We saw her work at the Marco Museum in La Boca, where she presented “Cosmogonía Nativa”. Her work, she confesses, has to do with dyeing and medicinal plants, with native plants linked to medicinal uses and shamanic practices that require joint work with healers, doctors, philosophers, biologists. Her work is textile, wool and felt, work on paper and also herbariums.
Still Helden She is a Brazilian artist who works in performance, video, sound and photography, as well as prosthetic incorporation.
Florence Levya prominent artist who recently exhibited an extraordinary show at Arthaus “Ultima Arquitectura”, brought Cott images that have to do with ancestral ruins, a refined drawing, and what extractivism produces in the sea.
Andres Paredes He is also a prominent artist who from the beginning has valued everything related to the habitat of his native Misiones. According to the text of Krämer “Taming the Storm”This artist creates tentacle-like organisms made from the salts of the earth.
Dino Valentinioriginally from Cruz del Eje (1988, Córdoba), painted ceilings during the pandemic, from there he moved on to murals with digital aesthetics with the purpose of changing the surrounding landscape.
Cesar Nunezteacher and cultural manager (Santa Fe, 1985) is carrying out a research and production project relating Art and Science. His work is closely linked to the Cosmos, which is why he has worked in the most important observatories in the country and also in Colombia.
The exhibition will be open until November 7. (Perú 973. Tuesday to Friday from 12 to 18. Saturdays from 11 to 15).
