Venice Film Festival: Tilda Swinton: I’m not afraid of death

The new film by Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar is about dying. One of the leading actresses is Tilda Swinton – who has no inhibitions about the subject.

Scottish actress Tilda Swinton says she is not afraid of death. The 63-year-old said this at the Venice Film Festival. She has never been afraid of it.

“I think the whole journey of accepting death can be a long one for some people. For some reason and because of some specific experiences in my life, it came quite early for me. I know it’s coming. I feel it coming, I see it coming. I support my friends as they make the transition, let’s put it that way.”

Moore and Swinton in Almodóvar’s first English film

Swinton plays a leading role in Pedro Almodóvar’s new film. She plays a woman named Martha who decides to die because of a serious illness. A second leading role is played by Julianne Moore. “The Room Next Door” is the first English-language film by Spanish director Almodóvar.

Moore plays a friend of Martha’s who supports her during this time. In Venice, the 63-year-old said that there are few films about the friendship of older women. “I don’t know if there is another filmmaker in the world other than Pedro who would tell this story.”

Both actresses emphasized their admiration for Oscar winner Almodóvar. Swinton said that when she met the director (“All About My Mother”), she practically applied to play a role in one of his films. She said to him: “Listen, I’ll learn Spanish for you. I can be mute, I don’t care.”
